What is Bacteria?

- Bacteria are microscopic, one-celled organisms that are spherical, spiral, or rod-shaped and appearing singly or in chains. From a phylum of the kingdom Monera, various species of which are involved in fermentation, putrefaction, infectious diseases, or nitrogen.

Properties of Bacteria:

· Prokaryotic
· No mitochondria or chloroplasts
· A single chromosome
· Have a rigid cell wall made of peptidoglycan
· The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer but contains no cholesterol or other steroids
· Mostly asexual reproduction
Escherichichia coli- e.coli Rod shaped (bacillus)

· Shape:
    • bacilli: rod-shaped
    • coccus: spherical
    • spirillum: complex

· Ability to form spores
· Method of energy production (glycolysis for anaerobes cellular respiration for aerobes)
· Nutritional requirements
· Reaction to the Gram stain
· Earliest form of life- 3.5 million years ago
· Can alter a cell or their selves
· 99% of bacteria are helpful less than 1% are harmful
· Kingdom Monera
· Usually localized in central are- doesn’t travel
  • Such as...
    • Strep Throat
    • Most Ear Infections
    • Urinary Tract Infections
    • Some Sinus Infections

Helpful VS. Harmful:

Helpful:

· Food
· Medicine
· Digestion
· Environment
· Pest Killers
· Land formations
· LIST IS ENDLESS

Harmful:

· Spoil foods
· Cause disease
*In six days flesh eating bacteria can severely harm or kill you.... 1% is harmful.*
