Meiosis

  • phases of Meiosis
    • Prophase 1- nuclear envelope breaks apart and the spindles start to go to both ends of the cell
    • Metaphase 1- spindles go to both sides of the cell and the chromosomes arrange in the middle
    • Anaphase 1 -the chromosomes are pulled apart
    • Telophase 1 - cell starts to divide
    • Prophase 2 - same as prophase 1 exept with 2 cells
    • Metaphase 2- same as metaphase 1 exept with 2 cell
    • Anaphase 2 - same as anaphase 1 exept with 2 cell
    • Telophase 2- same as telophase 1 exept with 2 cell divisions

  • Is preceded by chromosome duplication
  • The cell divides twice to form four daughter cells

  • Meiosis reduces the chromosome number from diploid to haploid
  • Crossing Over
    • Homologous chromosomes exchange corresponding segments
  • Meiosis 1
    • Separates each homologous pair
    • Produces two daughter cells, each with one set of chromosomes
  • Meiosis 2
    • Very similar to meiosis 1
    • The sister chromatids of each chromosome separate
    • The result is a total four haploid cells
