We need cells to replicate to replace old and damaged cells.

The Cell Cycle

Interphase is the longest phase.
G1: Growth phase
S: DNA synthesis
G2: Growth phase, centrioles, (part of the cytoskeleton and vital to cell division,) appear.

Mitotic phase occurs quickly; this is when the cell separates.
Prophase
Nuclear envelope breaks down
Chromatin condenses and thickens
Metaphase
Spindles fully develop
Chromosomes align at the metaphase plate
Anaphase
Paired chromosomes separate and move to poles
Telophase
Cell looks like a figure eight
Nuclear membranes/nucleoli reappear

Cytokinesis is the division of the original cell's cytoplasm
